Excursion

Our excursion will take is to the mountain village of Zaros at the southern foothills of the Psiloritis mountain range, located approximately 1 hour away from the Hellenic Center for Marine Research HCMR. 

Buses will depart from the conference venue (HCMR) at 12:30 SHARP to take us to the beginning of the Rouvas gorge which we will start hiking up at around 14:00 until we reach a plateau and then hike down again. The entire hike (up and down) takes about 4-5 hours. 

On the way back we will hike directly to the Votomos tavern  located HERE. Dinner will start at 20:00, so if you are a quick hiker like Olivier Gascuel you may also have time to walk around the village of Zaros before dinner. 

The buses will depart from the Votoms tavern at 22:00 and talk us back to the Astir beach hotel. 

Please be aware that the sun in Crete which is very far to the south is very intense in May, so please take sunscreen,a hat, and at least two liters of water with you. Appropriate hiking shoes are also required and long trousers are recommended.
